The journey to the ‘Heart of the Garden Route’ begins at the coastal town of Mossel Bay which lies half way between Cape Town & Port Elizabeth, 400km either way. It is the perfect gateway for the exploration of this popular region.

The story of Mossel Bay is largely that of Bartholomeu Dias, the Portuguese nobleman who circumnavigated the Cape in 1488. Of course, he was not the first to set foot on the shores of Mossel Bay; for tens of thousands of years indigenous people had lived on the shores of the bay. The middens laid down by them in the period from about 200 000 years ago to the end of the 15th century reveal the life-style and nutrition of these San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi. The cave near today’s St. Blaize Lighthouse bears testimony to their presence.

The story continues; from Mossel Bay you travel on to George, the commercial hub of the region, and Wilderness, the picturesque lake district of South Africa. George spreads out in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains; take your time to explore this city’s history and the mountains.

Would you have believed that gold was once mined deep in the forests of Knysna, or that elephants, roaming freely in the Tsitsikamma mountains, would have been a threat to the miners?

Sunseekers will be lured to the white, sandy beaches in Plettenberg Bay, surfersThe bridges, bungy jumping Bloukrans Bridge etc.

The thrill of exploring narrow, steep mountain passes, hiking the Robberg peninsula walk, Otter Trail.
